Thread Gauges

This page is now presenting gauges in two formats - the mathematical ones to calculate coverage and also pictorially so that you can get a visual feel for how threads compare to each other.

This photo presents seven metallic threads in comparison to number 5 pearl cotton. Clockwise from top: Lincatex Gold Rush Embroidery; Rainbow Gallery Nordic Gold; DMC Metallic Embroidery; DMC #5 Pearl; Kreinik Fine Braid; Kreinik Medium Braid; Kreinik Heavy Braid; RI Ribbon Floss.

Those familiar with knitting or crochet know that yarn gauges are very helpful in knowing how to calculate sizing materials needed. Similar circumstances occur in temari making when you are working or designing a pattern and need to know how many rounds of pattern, or threads laying next to each other, are needed to cover a particular distance. The members of the Temari Discussion Group have begin compiling this information, about the threads most commonly used in temari making. Please note that the measurements are given in metric, one reason being the contributor starting it off lives in England, and the other being that once you begin temari making, you'll find that using metric measurements indeed becomes a lot easier, especially dividing c10 balls!

Please remember that this information will vary with your stitching tension, but in general will come in quite handy.

With thanks to: Ann W. for these numbers.
