Talktemari is a private, non-commercial email discussion group hosted by Yahoo Groups- that is, the services that Yahoo Groups provides via their listserv server (the thing that makes a discussion group work), and their common server storage space. As a Talktemari member you have access to the many benefits of being an Yahoo Group member - this page gives a rundown of them. And... please be sure that you have also subscribed to the website update list as I prefer not to use the discussion list for announcing site updates. TalkTemari is for discussing Temari - not posting personal notes about other topics or issues.
From time to time we have some group activities.... such as the GITS, sharing results of Mystery Balls, or ganging up on other group members for such occasions as might seem appropriate (all in fun or assistance).... whether you choose to play or participate is entirely up to you, and not contingent on you being a member of the group... but only group members get to play. There is also a Swap and Sell page for group members to share extra supplies and so forth. Don't forget too that you have the option of being added to the Temari Makers Database so that other Temari makers in your area or traveling to could contact you if you would like to be; and also the Temari Teachers Database if you feel that you could help a beginner - there is a demand for real human teachers. All of these extras are listed and described from the Join In contents page.
Also, we have some fun sharing files on the TalkTemari page on Yahoo Groups - You are warmly invited and encouraged to "play" - uploading is simple, just follow the examples and instructions on the page or email me if I can help. If you would like to share but do not have a digital camera or scanner, email me and I'll scan for you and return your photos with the images also on disk. Each group on Yahoo Groups has their own private, common section on the Yahoo Groups site that allows us extra ways to share with each other. First of all each member may - and I do urge you to - enter a little info about themselves in their personal profile, such as name, home state and such. In order for others on the group to see this info you much check the option that allows your profile to be seen by group member. Please note that ONLY group members have access to this area, via your own password, so it is a secure site. In addition there is the opportunity for group members to post files that they would like to share with the group - like photos - and also links that are of interest to the group, like if you have a personal website that involves Temari. There are also folders with photos of group members personal head shots (faces) of those that are not too shy to let you see who you are talking to, and also short bios of members that would like to share a little about themselves.
To get into all the "goodies" - you will need your Yahoo ID and password. If you have used Yahoo services before you already have one. If not, you may need to create one. If you were a member of Talk Temari when it was still eGroups, you will need to associate your eGRoups subscription with a Yahoo ID - either one you have or one you create. You will also have to link the email address you are subscribed to Talk Temari with to your Yahoo ID. Simple steps to do either of these things are on the Yahoo Groups home page.
Once you have you Yahoo ID, go to the Sign In page on Yahoo Groups and log in. Go to the My Groups page, and you will see a list of all the Yahoo Groups lists you beling to. Click on TalkTemari, and you will be on the group's home page. From there, use the menu of the left side of the page to access all the group benefits. Click to FILES on the menu on the left to access photos etc. or LINKS for links. You may add to these folders, following the examples and online help, and are warmly invited to do so to share with everyone your work and websites. Photos may be edited for size after posting, and in the event of space becoming limited, the older photos will be removed to allow new ones to be posted. You can also read past messages and archives, or access the members list from here. This is a secure area in that only group members are allowed access to it.
Please also be aware that several members of the group have businesses that can offer Temari supplies, instructions, patterns and related supplies. The list is not used to promote their or anyone else's personal business or any activity that results in personal financial gain to you or an acquaintance (the list is set up to be non-commercial so it is a conflict of interest for a group member to directly market on it), but it can be very helpful to order from people that know your craft. In Stitches (US), and Japan Crafts (AU) and Kiku Designs (US) are listed on the Supplies page. Temari Gifts, additional supplies and prepared Mari bases are available on Temari Extras (US), listed on the Supplies page. If you are new to the group and have such a site please let me know and I'll add you in. Discussion about offerings are allowed by others but not persons directly invovled or connected with a business. Likwise, those members with websites are invited to post the information once to the list but then related messages etc about updates and so forth need to be kept off talktemari. For this reason please be sure that you have joined Temarikai News so that you can get the latest temari news and notices about updates to the site. We have a large group - over 300 people, so the decision to not allow promotional, advertising or related postings was made to be sure that things don't get out of hand.
To use the Discussion Group (email list) - address your message to talktemari@yahoogroups.com. To reply to the group about a message that you have received from the group, just use the reply button on your email program. Anytime you reply to a TalkTemari note your post goes back to the entire group. Please remember that messages posted to the talktemari address should be about temari and of general interest to a majority of the group. They should not be of a personal nature, or about other topics or issues not about Temari. To reply to a single person, use their own private email address and send that person a note, not the group. Remember too that, per the statement that is on the info page on the site for subscribing to TalkTemari (my only hitch in starting the group), any info posted to the group becomes copyrighted property for possible inclusion on the site - with due credit to the poster of course. This is only in the mission of trying to create a most helpful and comprehensive reference site for Temari.
In general the group messages are not moderated except for new members. We unfortunately have had the problem of spamming email addresses being added to the list with the attempt to post very explicit pornography, so new members are moderated only long enough to see your first post and confirm that you are a "real person". As soon as it's seen that you are a legitimate person you will be removed from moderation. It's asked that you keep to the topic of temari when posting, and not other unrelated chat. This is not an outrageous request - it is common courtesy to the group members. Folks join to learn and talk about Temari... there are many other lists for other subjects. In addition, many members are running home businesses, or accessing from work, and cannot deal with a large load of off topic notes. If you do post a note to the group that is off the topic of Temari, please use the letters OT in the beginning of your subject line - then people will know that it is not Temari and skip it if need be.
You
have several options of how you receive and send mail to talktemari....
unless you change your option, you will receive "real-time" notes in
their
entirety as they are posted. Some prefer to receive only daily
summaries,
and then follow up on the notes that look interesting; some like to
receive
daily full text digests of messages. You may also choose to read all
notes
on the Yahoo Groups website in the talktemari space. To change your
message
option, access your account on Yahoo Groups and choose the desired
delivery
option. You may also unsubscribe from from the group home page on
Yahoo, or email me if you need help.
Lastly - please check out the other pages in
the Join In section of Temarikai.com to see the other fun things we get
ourselves into.... and, please add
your name and email address to the members database on the TalkTemari
homepage on Yahoo Groups so that the other members of the group can
find your address if they should want to email you privately.
This also is a BIG help for partners getting in touch with each other
for the GITS rounds.
If you are having difficulty with any function or benefit pelase do not hesitate to email me if I can help. Thank you - and Enjoy!
