Nicole went brainstorming on using swirl elements on some obi orientations, and she also affers this hint: here is a hint for stitching the swirl patterns that will keep you from getting really confused. Since the designs are made from mixing clockwise and counterclockwise swirls, mark all of the clockwise (or counterclockwise) sections with a pin. This way you won't have to find the pattern again after every stitching break. Hope this helps!
