Winged Star by Susan Leishman
Original pattern written by Susan Leishman July 2000

This temari was done in 3 colors of America's Best pearl cotton #5 and GoldRush sapphire blue metallic. One skein of each color should be enough.See the pattern Triangle Weave#1 for hints on using 2 threads in the needle at once. A tapestry needlethreader comes in handy for threading the needle. When the pattern says one row it means a row of double thread. Start by wrapping a 4-inch ball with rose sewing thread. With the sapphire metallic work a C10 division.

Place pins along the lines pointing to the corners of the pentagons 1/2 way between the center of the pentagons and the points. Use these pins as guides to work a star in each of the 12 pentagons following the chart.

Work the points of the stars just outside the pentagons. Using regular herringbone stitching work a row of green on each of the stars. When you come to a corner that overlaps the corner of another star, work over that stitching.

After all the green rows are worked, a row of rose around each star always working outward and having the points overlap. Then continuing in this manner, working 1 row of each star with a color and then switching to a new color. Work 1 row navy and 1 more row green.

Next with rose work a row of herringbone stitches close to the center of each star. Allow about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of blue metallic to show in the center of the
circle of rose. Then locate the 5 hexagon shapes that circle each star. You will be working a three-winged hexagon in each of these shapes. Start by working a row of rose near the center of each of these hexagons. Work around each thread of the metallic very near the center so that no blue metallic shows. Then use navy to work from points A to F and back to A as on the chart. This is your 3-winged hexagon. The center is worked very close to the rose row in the hexagons and the points are worked 2-thread width from the centers of the stars.Once all the navy rows are worked follow with a row of green. If you wish extra lines of metallic trim can be added to the centers of each star. I omitted this step on the temari in the photos.
