For this temari you will need 3 colors of DMC#5: 1/2 skein each of a light and medium color and about 1 1/2 skeins of a dark color, plus a small amount. of a metallic. Wrap a 3-inch ball and do a complex 8 division. The wrapping thread will not show when done.

Put pins along the diagonal lines of each of the large squares 1/2; way between each corner and the center of the square. See red dots on chart.

#1: With the lightest color working outwards, work 4 rows around each of the squares marked in yellow on the chart. Always do each step around all the squares or triangle and then move to the next step.

#2: Next work around the triangles marked in green on the chart using the darkest color. Always use this color when working the triangle shape. First work 2 rows going over the corners of the squares then work 2 row going under the corners of the squares. To go under the corner threads, turn your needle and go under with the eye of the needle first.

#3: With the light color work 4 rows around the squares, going over rows 1 and 2 of the triangles and under rows 3 and 4. Keep in mind that row 1 is the row nearest the center of the triangle.

#4: Work 4 more rows around the triangles, working under all 8 rows of the squares. See photo for how your temari should look at this point.

#5: With the medium color work 4 rows around the squares, working over rows 1 -4, under rows 5 and 6 and over rows 7 and 8 of the triangles.

#6: Work 4 rows around the triangles working under all the rows of the squares.

#7: With the medium color work 4 rows around the squares, going over all the rows of the triangles except for rows 7 and 8. Work under them. Then work 4 more rows going over all the rows except 9 and 10. At this point check to see if the sides of the squares are parallel to one another and all an equal distance apart. You may need to use the tip of your needle to adjust them a little if they're not.

#8: Now work and equal number of rows around each triangle until the points of the triangles join or are about 1 thread apart, working under all the rows of the squares. Finish with a row of metallic along the seam where they join.

#9: With the dark color now work and equal amount of rows around each square until they join or are one thread apart. Finish with a row of metallic between them or over the seam where they join.
