Scool Spirit by Susan Leishman

This is a simple geometric pattern, which can be done in 2 different ways.    See step 2 for the second option.  It is perfect for working in your school colors or try it in white with gold metallic for a wedding gift. The temari pictured was done in sapphire metallic and white Omega nylon thread with a silver metallic thread in it. #5 pearl cotton may be used instead of the Omega. If using the Omega, just use it as it comes. No need to untwist it.

Start by wrapping a 3-inch ball with white thread and doing a complex 8 division with the blue metallic or a thin silver metallic.

Step 1: Place pins in the spots indicated on the chart by the black dots.  These are 1 cm from the center of the square. Work a triangular shape as indicated by the orange lines in the chart. Work outward until you reach the lines bisecting the sides of the large squares. Do 1 row metallic, 5 rows white, 1 row metallic, 3 rows white and 1 row metallic. You should end up with a total of 8 triangles on the ball.

Step 2: The square shapes shown in green are worked next. Using the inner points of the triangles (the points marked by the black dots), work a square over the threads of the triangles. Working outward, do 2 rows metallic, 3 rows white, 1 row metallic, 1 row white and 1 row metallic. As a variation try working over the 11 threads of the
first triangle, under the next 11 threads, over, under, over, under, over and under.  This will give an interwoven effect.

Step 3: The diamond shapes shown in yellow are worked last. Refer to the photo to clarify their placement if necessary. Start by working a diamond joining the red dots on the chart. Two of the dots are just outside the inner edge of the triangle shapes. The other 2 dots are 1 cm from the outer sides of the small squares worked in step 2.  Work so that the points of the diamonds meet at the corners of the large squares on the ball. You may need to place the rows further apart at the tips near the corners in order to elongate the diamond to reach these corners. Work 2 rows metallic, 5 rows white, 1 row metallic, 1 row white and 1 row metallic.

That's it! Very simple, but elegant looking don't you think?
