Flower Fan by Susan Leishman
Original pattern written by Susan Leishman July 2000
This is a very simple pattern and can easily be made in an evening. The flowers on the fan could be done with size 11 seed beads if desired.

Wrap a 3 inch ball with black thread. Do a simple 4 division using 2 strands of the same black thread or #5 or #8 black DMC.

Use a copy of the chart below to cut a fan out of paper, or just draw a 2 3/4 inch circle on a piece of paper, fold and cut in half, then fold the half circle into eighths. Pin the paper fan to your ball at point B using the charts below to position it. There are a total of 4 fans on the ball. Pin and do the first one and then reuse the pattern for the others. Use your fingers to shape the flat pattern to the round ball

Put pins on the ball at the points marked with the blue dots. Use a gold metallic thread to add first the lines marked in blue on the chart. Next, still using the gold metallic, add the red lines by eyeing their position between the first lines and then finish the outline of the fan by doing the green lines using regular herringbone stitch. When done the fan should look like the photo below. I used Gold Rush metallic and #5 DMC for this temari.

Next do a total of 5 rows of herringbone stitch right below the top row of metallic . First do 2 rows with a dark rose and then 3 rows with a light pink. Work around each of the gold lines in the fan. Finish the fan by adding an extra gold line that starts at point A circles around the base of the gold lines at point B and ends at point C. Add 2 small flowers to each fan made from 3 lazy daisy stitches in blue and a French knot in rose. Add a tie to the base of the fan using the photo as a guide. After completing all 4 fans gold metallic flowers and leaves consisting of lazy daisy stitches, French knots and straight stitches can be added to fill in the spaces between them as desired. Use the photo as a guide.
