Materials:  23 cm base, wrapped in red

#5 Pearl cotton in white; #8 Pearl cotton in red or double strand of thread used to wrap the base

The key to creating the hearts in the negative space is to mark the ball into a C8 division with half of the marking lines in red and the other half in white.

Prepare the ball by placing pins to mark an S8 division. Alternate pin colors at the equator as shown.  With #8 Pearl cotton in red (or double strand of base thread), mark an S4 division on the pink pins, as shown. Do not mark the equator. With #5 Pearl cotton in white, mark an S4 division with an equator on the blue pins as shown

At the equator, there will be four 4-spoke white intersections. These intersections will be the center of the extra marking lines for a C8 division. Make these marking lines with #8 Pearl cotton in red. Be sure to weave under or stitch under where the red and white marking threads meet.
 This shows the completed marking

Chose an 8-spoke intersection along the equator. Using white #5 Pearl cotton, stitch six rows of an open square using the points where the white guidelines intersect the sides of the square at the 8-spoke intersection. Figure 6 shows the first row of the square completed. Move to an adjacent 8-spoke intersection and stitch another square with six rows of white #5 Pearl cotton. Where the squares intersect, alternate between weaving over and under as shown in Figure 7. Continue until all six 8-spoke intersections have been stitched with an open square.

Using #5 Pearl cotton in white, stitch 6 rows of an open triangle at each 6-spoke intersection. To determine the points of the triangle, use the red marking lines where they meet the sides of the squares as shown.
