1.Prepare a c10 with white thread as final wrap, and markings
done
with a
very light scrap thread, or white #8 pearl cotton. You will need Pearl
#5 in white, black, and 6 colors. These directions are based on a
2.75
inch diameter ball. Other size balls can be done by altering
the
number of rows in step 4, or using different thicknesses of threads.
2.Chose one of the pentagons and make note of the 5 small equilateral
triangles that border it, one on each side. Place a pin half way down
the marking thread that bisects each of these triangles. (Labeled
points A, B, C, D, E in Figure 1).
3.Using black pearl cotton, stitch a
pentagon around these 5 pins, then remove pins.
4.Using one shade of
colored pearl cotton, stitch 10 more rows.
5.Choose a
second, adjacent pentagon and mark as in step 2. Follow
directions in steps 3 and 4 using a second color, but be sure to go
under all of first rows at one point and over at the other crossing
point.
6.Continue with subsequent pentagons, being sure to cross over and
under
appropriately where rows intersect (see Figure 2). Each of 6
colors
will be used twice on opposite poles on the ball.
7.When all 12 pentagons
are finished, note the 20 areas with 3 crossing
bands of color. Stitch a triangle around each with first row
black,
next white, next black then 3 or more rows of white until the ball is
completely covered (figure 3 – figure shows one stitched triangle all
in black)
