Squares and Hexagons

A design that can be found in several Japanese books, it also can be worked on a C10 (See the TK pattern index, Temari 70 on page 1). Lynne offers the C8 version.

It is versatile enough to be worked on many size maris; the final number of rounds needed will of course depend on the size of the mari. This version uses two colors of pearl cotton worked in a striped effect - you can also vary this to your liking.

While the majority of the pattern is worked in pearl cotton, working the first round of each square and hexagon in a thicker metallic will add some center focus.

Wrap a mari (to start we'd suggest at least a 2 1/2 inch diameter mari - once you are familiar with the pattern you can work it on almost any size). Mark a C8. Find the six squares formed with the C8 division around each pole (shown in green on the diagram). Stitch one or two rounds (depending on how thick you want the stripes of the pattern to appear)  from points along points A, B, C, D back to A on each square.

Locate points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 as shown in the diagram - they will form and irregular hexagon. Stitch one or two (the same number as you did on each square) rounds on each hexagon, overlapping the corners into the squares (there will be 8 hexagons on the ball).

Return to the squares and stitch another round or set of rounds in the alternating color from the first one you used; repeat on the hexagons.

Repeat the alternating color sequence between squares and hexagons until the hexagons fill in and the outer sides of the squares come together as shown in the example photo.

Work a final round to outline the hexagons.

Add long straight stitches in the center of the squares to embellish the poles, or embellish the pattern as you wish to.
