The Talk Temari online group regularly holds Temari Swaps where
the members are paired off and make a temari to send to their partner. We
have started sharing photos of the temaris made for these swaps.... and this
one turned out to be a popular one and in demand for the pattern directions.
Lynne D of British Columbia Canada interpreted it from one of the Japanese
books and shares her throughts here.
Webmaster's note - Lynne gives information specific to working a
3 inch diameter mari - if you vary the size you will also need to play by
ear the number of rows you stitch.

I had to go and have a look at it and the book... this is in
the Shinshu Temari (or Unbelievable Temari) ISBN # 8377-0597-9. pg 22, top
left (actually 2nd one) next to the seam of the book. It is a light blue
ball with greens and burgundys and nav's and it has triangles in roses..And that
one looks nothing like the picture of the one I did. I also didn't
put the triangles in it this time that you will see if you have the book.
I will use the colors I used so you can refer to
the picture...... here goes.....
Mark a 3" ball in the C8. When you look at it you
will have the 6 centers, you will also have 8 triangles. 4 from one pole
to the obi and 4 from the other pole to the obi. First I marked the
8 triangles, each one 1 1/2cm. from the 3 corners. I then stitched
8 rows of green in each triangle.
Next I did the 6 square centers in blue. I again
measured 1 1/2 cm from the corners and stitched 8 rows of blue... weaving
them over and under the green triangles as I came to them in this order:
The first 2 rows were under the 16 rows
of green
The next 2 rows I did over 2 rows over the green,
under 12 rows and over the last 2 rows of the green
The next 2 rows I did over 4 rows of green and under
8 rows and over the last 4 rows of green
The next rows I did over 6 rows of green and under
4 rows and over the last 6 rows of green.
Next with the white I measured 1 cm from
the the poles (and at the other centers on the ball ) and reversed the stitching
of the green.
I did under 6 rows of green and over 4 rows of green
and under the last 6 rows of green.. twice
next I did under 4 rows of green and over 8
rows of green and under the last 4 rows of green...twice
next I did under 2 rows of green and over 10 rows
of green and under the last 2 rows of green. twice
and last I did over all the rows of green twice.
