This pattern is Karen's interpretation of "Four Patch and Triangles" as pictured in Edo Temari, pg 4; no pattern is given in the book to work this ball.

Prepare and mark a regular C8 on a 25cm ball (wrap color will be covered completely). add additional mark threads in each of the six "squares" shown by the red and blue lines in the diagram. This will result in 6 smaller squares, each with a "4 patch" of squares that have an X in them, as well as smaller triangles.
Work squares in each of the X'd squares, starting with the darkest shade of a graduated color sequence of 4 to 5 shades. End each square with one round of white (or have the color sequence have about 6 shades and use the lightest shade). On a 25 cm ball, this takes about 13 rounds including the white (shown in green in the diagram).
Work triangles in the same gradated sequence using 3 alternating marker threads.
With a double thread in the lightest shade or white, fill in spaces over marker threads, working the "+" in the squares first, and then from pole to pole.
Ball is complete.
