Stage 1 - Prepare and mark a 34cm/4 inch ball with a simple 8 division, including obi. Divide each of the 8 lines into thirds and mark with pins. Work a "spindle" on each marker thread beginning at the points marked in the previous step. Work 21 rounds - when the spindle is complete there should be 21 threads to the left and 21 threads to the right of the original marker thread (total=42). Tips of the spindles should be approximately one to one and a half cm from the poles. *** Be sure to use thread that constrasts well with the mari wrap.
Karen offers the following thread estimates: For all 8 spsindle the same color, 3-4 skeins of Number 5 pearl. For 2 colors alternating every other spindle - 2 of each color. For 4 colors, 2 spindles each, 1 skein of each color. For 8 different colors, 1 skein of each color. You will also need one skein of  contrasting color or mathing the mari wrap for stage 2. Stage 2 will use weaving to complete the ball.

General Weaving Directions:
Use the eye end of the needle to weave and avoid catching mari wrap threads. Use either a contrasting thread or one that matches the mari wrap (this gives very dramatic results). You will need one skein of thread to complete the weaving. As you weave use a second long needle to adjust the threads into place. Follow the weaving pattern choosing either number 1 or number two - but they are NOT interchangable. Work from the obi to the north pole then turn the ball and repeat pattern from obi to south pole. Do each row completely around the ball, repeating the row sequence on each spindle.

Weaving Patten 1 - use this OR Weaving Pattern 2:
