Hime Interpretation from  http://ww2.enjoy.ne.jp/~matutake-913/index.html

The cited website is in Japanese but shows methods of these wrapped designs. Joan worked up an applied version based on an example from the site. Per Joan: "This is a very easy temari to make. The pattern is achieved by the order of the wraps. I used a 4inch Styrofoam core with a simple 12 divide and Omega Nylon for the design elements. You can also use #5 pearl cotton, Rayon floss, or Silk. The temari pictured has a gold thread wrap.
Optional wraps are: red with heavy use of gold accent threads, a golden yellow thread wrap, or the traditional red thread wrap with a yellow grid as the first design element. You will need bright primary colors: green, red, white, blue"

Divide your mari into a simple 12 with keeper pins at the 12 points around the obi. Do not mark with guidelines. I used one green and one white pin for my starting place and one red and white pin for the first red peddle starting place. After that I alternated 2green pins 2 red pins around the obi.

Start your wrap at the keeper pins. Your first rows will be 2 cm out from the pole pin. Remember to cross over when you go through the keeper pins on the opposite side of your mari. e.g. If your thread passes 2 cm to the right of the north pole pin, it will pass 2cm to the left of you south pole pin. This helps to keep the thread from sliding. Wrap inward on all rows. Your thread should get closer to the pole with each row.

1. Wrap 7 rows of green right and left of the pole on all 6 green places around the mari.

2. Wrap 7 rows of red right and left of the pole on all 6 red places around the mari.

3. Leave a small gap, enough for 2 or three rows, between the green and white and wrap 7 rows of white, right and left of the poles on all 6 green places.

4. Wrap 7 rows of red; lay your thread against the last row of red, right and left of the pole on all 6 red places.

Outlines: 2 or 3 rows, what ever you feel looks good (see main photo above).
5. Wrap the White outline in the gap between the green and white petals.

6. Wrap the blue outline in the gap between the two sides of the white petals.

7.Wrap a red outline in the gap between the 2 sides of the red petals.

8. Wrap gold accent in the gap between the two sides of the red petals. Spread them out.

9. Wrap a red outline on the outside of the red peddles.

Obi: Blue outlined in white. Pass thread under, back over, then under to bind threads in together at the obi.
