STICHING THE STARS
Starting at a pin on a corner line, stitch around the hexagon laying
your thread through the keeper pins. See photo pattern 1. I did 6 rows
of royal blue, 3 rows of sky blue, and finished the outline by
stitching into the center of the square with royal blue.
Repeat until all hexagons are marked. See photos below for the progress
of the temari.

METALLIC ACCENTS
Wrap 3 lines of silver around the temari through the keeper pins and
over the center of the stars.
Now choose another star and wrap 3 lines of silver around the ball.
Take a stitch in the center of the star whenever it crosses the
previous silver lines. Repeat until all stars are accented.
With double thread of gold outline the hexagons. Start at a corner and
get your stitch as close to the edge of the star as possible. When you
come to keeper pins take a stitch around all the threads and pull them
as tight as possible. Make sure your thread lays close along the side
of the star when you move onto the next corner. See photo at right.

Stitching the Hexagons:
Add extra lines to 1 hexagon by dividing the 6 sections inside the
hexagon in half. Stitch the kiku pattern of you choice. (I did 4
different kiku on my temari using the pinks and rose.)
On a hexagon that touches the kiku hexagon stitch a flax pattern. First
stitch a triangle in the hexagon putting the points in the center
between the marking lines (see diagram below, left). Then stitch a
second triangle placing the corners on the other 3 sides (diagram
below, center). This will give you a hexagon full or small triangles
that make up small hexagons. Bring your thread up in the center of a
small triangle and down in the center of a small triangle across from
it. You will be stitching 6 pointed stars over all the small hexagons
and each tri-angle will have three lines meeting in its center. Fill in
each small triangle with lines. (diagram below, right).
If you are stitching different patterns in your hexagons make sure like
patterns do not touch each other. Stitch a pattern in each of the 8
hexagons.
Your temari is done.
