Turtles
and Cherry Blossoms
Joan posted this pattern in her photo album and it became another
"request". She shares her thoughts for embellishing an interlocked C8
Kiku to include the traditional turtles and cherry blossoms that are a
popular part of Japanese tradition. You'll need both pearl cotton and
stranded embroidery floss. This pattern utilizes both traditional
temari elements as well as standard embroidery stitches such as satin
stitch and French knots. Colors:
#5 pearl cotton. royal blue, md blue,
baby blue, variegated brown, dk green Floss:
lt.pink, deep pink, md.green Wrap and divide a
C8 mari; with these colors use a very light blue. |

Using royal blue stitch
kiku, one row around each of the 6 poles using the blue dots as
placement guides. Repeat ONE ROW AT A TIME around each pole, with
2nd row of royal blue,1 row metallic,4 rows of md blue, 1 row metallic,
3 rows of light blue. (This will create an interwoven Kiku pattern, one
kiku centered on each pole of the C8, with the points interwoven as
shown in the photo).

Turtles: brown and green on the
chart. After you stitch the interwoven kikus, it will leave shield shape spaces over the center of the 8 tri-angles. This is where the turtles are worked (refer to the photo). Using variegated brown stitch a solid hexagon on each. Mark the shells with metallic if desired. Stitch head flippers and tail around the shell. I used French knots for some of the turtles and a herringbone for the others, crossing the thread under the edge of the shell. Using 6 strands of md green floss separated attach “moss” to the turtles back by passing the needle thru a stitch in the shell and tying a knot with the two ends.Trim the moss unevenly and separate with your needle if still twisted. For the Cherry Blossoms, pink on the chart :Using 6 strands separated of light pink floss, Satin stitch between the kiku stitches in all 6 areas. Accent the blossom with 3 strands separated of deep pink. Ball is finished |
