Wrap mari with Black thread.  Measure and mark 8 Simple Divisions with obi.  Stitch mark lines with Black #5 Perle Cotton.  Tack poles. On each mark line place a pin 1/2 way between obi and pole in both hemispheres.  Number pins* 1-8 counter clockwise.

Red Pattern - Bring needle threaded with Red up and to the left of pin #1.  Take a herringbone stitch just above the NP on line #6.  White pin is just a reminder of the Red start point.

Rotate mari and take a herringbone stitch above pin #3.  Rotate mari and take a herringbone stitch above pin #8.

Rotate mari and take a herringbone stitch above pin #5. Rotate mari and take a herringbone stitch above NP on line #2.

Rotate mari and take a herringbone stitch above pin #7. Rotate mari and take a herringbone stitch above pin #4.

Rotate mari and take a herringbone stitch back at the start point and ready for next round.  Do NOT trim thread.

Gold Pattern – Bring need threaded with Gold up and to the left of pin #3.  Take a herringbone stitch just above the NP on line #8. Yellow pin is just a reminder of the Gold start point.

Rotate mari and take a herringbone stitch above pin #5.  Rotate mari and take a herringbone stitch above pin #2.

Rotate mari and take a herringbone stitch above pin #7. Rotate mari and take a herringbone stitch above NP on line #4.

Rotate mari and take a herringbone stitch above pin #1. Rotate mari and take a herringbone stitch above pin #6.

Rotate mari and take a herringbone stitch back at the start point and ready for next round.  Do NOT trim thread.

Work a total of 5 rounds on each Red and each Gold pattern. Stitch the same Mariner’s Compass at the South Pole.  Match the start points so the solid Red and solid Gold points are on the same mark line.

Security Square – After the last Gold round stitch a single round Red Square on even mark lines outlining the Red/Gold center square.  This will keep threads from slipping.

Groom the threads into place.  If necessary, tack the threads so they don’t slip.

OBI – Measure from obi pin up to point of Mariner’s Compass and mark on paper tape.  Fold in half.  Use that half measurement to place a pin on each mark line above and below the obi. With Metallic Green ribbon work herringbone stitch diamonds around the obi.  With Metallic Gold ribbon work a herringbone stitch zigzag pattern close outside the Green diamonds.  With Metallic Red ribbon work a herringbone stitch zigzag pattern close outside the Gold zigzag. With Red/Green/Gold Blend ribbon stitch a single band around the obi through the center of the obi pattern.

Secure and decorate the obi with Gold filament pine needle stitches in the center of each Diamond.

Note:  Some tacking of the Mariner’s Compass rounds may be necessary to keep this very slippery Patina thread in place.

*  Create “number pins” by gluing beads printed with numbers to the head of each pin.  Point pin toward ceiling.  Place a drop of glue on the pin where the shaft enters the head.  Slide the bead down the pin shaft and hold against the pin head until the glue sets. Numbers written on paper slips can also be used on each pin.
