Katrina's Starry Band

A recent round of the TalkTemari GITS list was a color challenge inspired by the colors chosen by the 13 year old daughter of a TT member, to use in her temporary bedroom (they evacuated Hurricane Katrina, but thankfully they will go home to their house and possessions). The challenge was successful and the round also inspired some dedicated patterns. Glenna shares one of several here with "Katrina's Starry Band"; it's inspired from a temari she saw on a Japanese website.

Materials:  3” Styrofoam ball, Yellow wrap thread, Gold metallic mark line, #5 Perle Cotton (Yellow, Orange, Hot Pink, Royal, Burgundy, Ivory, Hunter). Measure and divide mari into 10 Simple Divisions without an obi.  Stitch mark lines with Gold metallic thread.  Tack at poles.

Determine the width of the bands you like.  Depending on your choice of thread and the final circumference of your wrapped mari, your numbers may be different from mine.  I wrapped 16 threads, so that’s how I will discuss the process.  Adjust as needed if you use different materials.  On your marking paper tape lay 16 threads side by side and mark the width on each side.  This is your Band Width.

Pin Markers: On 5 odd mark lines place a Pink pin 1 cm out from the North pole.   Place another pin 1 Band Width down from the first pin.  Use 5 different colors of pins. When you place the pins for the South pole, be sure that they are on the SAME mark lines used at the NP.  When you place the 2nd pin, be sure it is the same COLOR as the pin used on that line at the NP. You should now have 2 pins on alternate mark lines which are 1 cm out from pole and 1 Band Width apart from each other.

Wrapped Bands

Yellow

Wrap Yellow Perle Cotton around the mari 17 times, then cut.  Thread the needle and knot the two ends together.

Beginning near the NP bring thread up to the left of the mark line and below one of the Pink pins.  Hold the mari with the NP to your left and the SP to your right.

Wrap 8 complete rounds of doubled Yellow.  When you are at the NP, thread will work Outward from the pole, when you are the SP thread will work Toward the pole.  At the end of 8 rounds, bury the tail.

Royal

Begin at the next Pink pin clockwise from your Yellow start pin.  Follow directions above for bringing thread up.  Using the blunt end of your needle weave the doubled Royal threads over/under Yellow in the following sequence:

NP Yellow        SP Yellow

Over all        Under all
U 2/O 14        U 14/O 2
U 4/O 12        U 12/O 4
U 6/O 10        U 10/O 6
U 8/O 8          U 8/O 8
U 10/O 6        U 6/O 8
U 12/O 4        U 4/O 12
U 14/O 2        U 2/O 14

Translation:  In the NP Yellow column, “U 2/O 14” means in the northern hemisphere when you come to the Yellow band the Royal threads  pass under 2 Yellow and over 14 Yellow.

Burgundy

Begin at the next Pink pin clockwise from your Royal start pin.  Now you will weave through the two previously wrapped bands.  There is no weaving at the obi.

NP Royal        NP Yellow        SP Royal        SP Yellow

U 2/O 14        Over all        Under all        Under all
U 4/O 12        U 2/O 14        U 14/O 2        U 14/O 2

Continue the sequence to complete the Burgundy band.

Orange:

NP Burgundy       NP Royal    SP Yellow     SP Burgundy       SP Royal      NP Yellow

U 2/O 14               O all            O 2/U 14            U all                   U all          U 14/O 2
U 4/O 12             U 2/O 14      O 4/U 12        U 14/O 2          U 14/O 2       U 12/O 4

Continue the sequence to complete the Orange band.

Hot Pink:

NP Orange     NP Burg       SP Royal       SP Yellow         SP Orange     SP Burg      NP Royal      NP Yellow

U 2/O 14            O all           O 2/U 14         O 2/U 14             U all             U all             O 14/U 2       O 14/U 2
U 4/ O 12      U 2/O 14        O 4/U 12         O 4/U 12          O 2/U 14       O 2/U 14      O 12/U 4       O 12/U 4

Continue the sequence to complete the Hot Pink band.

Obi Bands

At the obi wrap 8 rounds of Hunter Green over all.  On each side of the Hunter band weave 8 rounds (doubled thread) in Ivory.

1st round outside Hunter is wrapped over all
2nd round under 2/over 28/under 2, repeat at all other band intersections
under 4/over 24/under 4
under 6/over 20/under 6
under 8/over 16/under 8
under 10/over 12/under 10
under 12/over 8/under 12
under 14/over 4/under 14

Repeat the last woven round with 1 strand Gold metallic.

Starburst

Work Gold metallic pine needle stitches over the Ivory band between the colors.  Tack center. NOTE:  This figure was shown on the original I downloaded from a Japanese website.  I omitted it for lack of space.
