Zebra
Triangles and Squares (Cosmo 3, page 12, #1)
Materials: 3” Styrofoam ball, 300 yards black sewing thread, #5
Pearl Cotton in Black and White, needle (3” or longer with large eye),
pins,
1. Wrap ball with black sewing thread. Measure and mark
8CD. Stitch mark lines with Black Pearl Cotton. Groom the
mark lines until they are even. Tack stitch the 8-line and 6-line
intersections.
2. Locate 6-line intersections. Identify the four triangles
surrounding each pole. On the mark line which runs from the pole
through the point of a triangle, place a pin half way between the pole
and the 6-line intersection. Measure and place pins on 2
alternate mark lines in the triangle. Repeat on remaining
triangles.
3. Measure the thread you will need for each triangle.
Loosely wrap White #5 Perle Cotton around one set of Triangle pins 5
times plus one triangle side. Use this thread as a measure and
cut 1 White and 1 Black #5 Perle Cotton for EACH Triangle. Using
those same pins identify the square around each 8-line
intersection. These are the Squares which will interlock with the
Triangles. Measure and cut as above 1 White and 1 Black #5 Perle
Cotton for each Square.
4. You will now stitch an interlocking pattern of striped
triangles and squares. There will be LOTS of threads hanging off
of your mari. (You can do it! Remember you stitch the
pattern one thread at a time!)
Each triangle will be a total of 8 rounds (4 rounds
of 1 WT and 1 BK). Each square will be the same Wt/Bk pattern for
8 rounds.
Each pattern is stitched One Line at a Time on Every
shape!
Begin with WHITE on each shape.
I suggest that you work one White round on all of
the Triangles. Then work one round of the same color on all of
the Squares. Change color and repeat. After you complete
one round of each color on all shapes, you should begin to see the
interlocking pattern.
Continue stitching until you complete 8 rounds on
each shape.
4. After the interlocking triangles and squares are complete, you
will work another pattern of squares. These will be close beside
the mark lines. If they are flush to the mark line, it will look
like a very wide striped band.
These squares will be 3 rounds wide
(Wt/Bk/Wt). You will weave under the Left leg of the triangles
and over the Right leg of the triangles.
Note: a) If you want to be sure you start close enough to be flush with
the mark lines, measure the width of your band first. Lay a group
of 5 Pearl Cotton threads close together beside the mark thread.
Place a pin at each corner to mark your starting place. b) The
original had a total of 10 rounds on each shape. The original
also had more open space in and around the shapes. It must have
been worked on a larger mari or with smaller threads.
