Zebra Interlocked Spindles (Cosmo 3, page 7, #5)

Materials:  3” Styrofoam ball, 300 yards black sewing thread, silver mark thread, #5 Pearl Cotton in Black, White, and Red or Turquoise, 6 needles (3” or longer with large eye), pins

1.  Wrap mari with black sewing thread.  Measure and mark mari with 12 SD with obi.  Stitch vertical mark lines with Silver or White.   Mark the obi with a pin through the vertical mark line.  Do not stitch obi. Measure the point 1/2 way between obi and poles.  Place a pin on each mark line at that point.

 2.  On each vertical line work a spindle at the obi beginning at the 1/2 way point pins.  Each spindle will be 8 rounds beginning with White and alternating 1 Wt/1 Bk.

3.  Next work 3 interlocking spindles around each pole on alternating mark lines.  These will be stitched 1 round at a time on each spindle.  This stitch sequence will produce a 6 point star at each pole.

Stitching these spindles will be easier if there is one needle for each color on each spindle.  Use number pins to keep the sequence.  The first round on each spindle is White, so those beginning points are 1, 2, and 3.  At spindle mark line 4 I began with Black (opposite 1).  In this way there is only one needle on each mark line.  You just work around the mari stitching a spindle round on each spindle mark line.

Begin the first round at the 1/2 way point pin and take the stitch around the mark line running down the center of the obi spindle.  The pole interlocking spindles will be 8 rounds beginning with White and alternating 1 Wt/1 Bk.  Spindles are elongated and should almost reach the obi when complete.

Note:  The spindles from the pole are worked on top of the obi spindles.

4.  Wrap an obi with Red or Turquoise.  Obi weaves over the spindles which are overlapped by the pole spindles.  Obi weaves under the free obi spindles.

Variation:

1.  Wrap mari.  Measure and mark with pins and thread as in #1 above.  Stitch obi with Red Pearl Cotton.

2.  Work herringbone stitches from the obi up to the 1/2 way point pin, then back to obi for a total of 6 rounds.  Begin with White.  Work White first.

To begin bring thread up about 4 thread widths to the Right of a mark line, take the herringbone stitch above the 1/2 way point pine, stitch back into the wrap thread  about 4 thread widths to the left of the mark line.  At the obi these stitches form a Diamond.  As you work subsequent rounds you will need to bring the thread over the previous threads and to the outside to form the Diamond rounds.  Try to make all of these “cross overs” at the same point. Secure by working one more round of White on the diamond pattern only. Repeat the entire herringbone diamond pattern on SP hemisphere.

You should now have striped arches on alternate mark lines in both hemispheres.  Diamonds are worked at the obi between the arches.

4.  Now work 3 interlocking spindles at each pole in the same pattern described above in #3 of the original above.  When working up from the 1/2 way pin weave over the arch.  When working down from the pole, weave under the arch.  Spindles are elongated and should almost reach the obi diamonds when complete.

5.  Stitch and weave a Turquoise obi under all striped patterns.
