Temari Pattern 99GK05
Advanced Beginner Pattern contributed by Glenna Kipp

Glenna likes to experiment through different themes of temari and recently did a series of temari in a study of black and white. She shares a number of her interpreted patterns with us.

Zebra Belts

From the Japanese Temari book Cosmo 3, page 2, temari in basket

Materials:  3” Styrofoam ball, 300 yards black sewing thread, Silver metallic mark line, White and Black #5 Pearl cotton, pins, needle (3” or longer with large eye)

1.  Wrap mari with sewing thread.  With paper tape measure and divide mari into 8 Complex Divisions.  Stitch mark lines with Black.

2.  Identify all 8-line intersections with one color of pins.  Identify all 2-line intersections with a different color of pins.

3.  Stitch 1 Black wrap beside of the Black mark lines at all 8-line intersections.  Repeat with the Black mark lines at all “+” intersections.  If you have number pins, use them.

4.  Stitch 2 White wraps on either side of the Black lines (1 wrap/1 mark line) worked in #3, following the same directions and sequence.

5.  Continue stitching 2 wraps on either side until each band is (2 W, 2 B, 2 W, 2 B, 2 W, 2 B, 2 W) complete.  Finish each color on all bands before moving on to the next. When wraps are complete, there should be striped bands intersecting to form squares at all “+” intersections and to form 6 point stars at all 8-point intersections.  Silver 6-line intersections should show in the spaces.

*  G’s variation:  The original ended with Black.  I ended with White, then outlined the intersections with Black to keep the band threads close together.  My threads were slipping off the roundness of the mari.

Note:  The original may have been stitched on a larger mari or with finer thread than I used.  I did not have room to make the silver stitches which show in between the bands in the Cosmo photograph.

Groom the threads using the eye end of you needle to push them close together.  When you get a section aligned, place a pin at the intersection or beside the band to keep it in place. At the Square intersections, stitch a single Black thread over each band.  Be sure that your stitch goes across the threads, not in line with them.  Be sure that you catch the wrapping threads in each stitch. At the Star intersections come up beside the band at a “V”.  Stitch over the band and down into the “V” on the other side.  Stitch under the band and up at the “V” and repeat a parallel stitch going back in the direction you started from.  You have now secured one band of that intersection.  Secure the remaining bands. The Black outline threads not only secure the intersections, they define the shapes formed at each intersection.
