Glenna likes to experiment through different themes of temari and recently did a series of temari in a study of black and white. She shares a number of her interpreted patterns with us.

Polar Diamonds

This pattern comes from the Japanese Book Cosmo 3, page 32, bottom left

Materials:  3inch Styrofoam ball, Black sewing thread, Black and White #5 Pearl Cotton, Gold metallic braid, pins, needle (3 inch or longer with large eye)

1.  Wrap mari with Black thread.  With paper tape measure and mark mari for 8 Complex Divisions.  Stitch with Black Pearl Cotton.  Measure and place a pin half way between pole and obi on each vertical mark line.

2.  Place a start pin on a mark line 1.5 cm above and below the half way pin.  Place a start pin 1.5 cm to the right and left of the half way pin.  Wrap a thread around these four pins to see if they form a diamond around the half way pin.

3.  Stitch a Diamond (4 White, 1 Gold) around the four pins.

4.  Measure, mark and stitch Diamonds on all remaining mark lines.  I found it easier to stitch 4 Diamonds on alternate mark lines first.  Then stitch the remaining 4 Diamonds interlocking the first 4 (under the first Diamond leg, over the second Diamond leg).

5.  The Cosmo book does not show the obi.  Until I can read the directions, I have to guess what it stitched on the obi.  I repeated the interlock diamonds pattern in this way:  Add a pin through the obi thread 1/2 way between each of the original 8 pins.  Using these pins as guides, place a pin 1 cm above and 1 cm below the new obi pins. Stitch Diamonds (2 White, 1 Gold rounds) beginning at an original obi point, up to a 1 cm pin, around the adjacent original obi point, down to a 1 cm pin, and back to the obi start point.  This diamond should be wide in the spaces between the pole diamonds.  The interlocking obi points should be beneath the lowest point of a polar diamond.

6.  Remaining obi Diamonds interlock over and under at the obi points.
