Advanced Beginner Pattern contributed by Glenna Kipp  /  Download PDF File of this pattern

Glenna likes to experiment through different themes of temari and recently did a series of temari in a study of black and white. She shares a number of her intepreted patterns with us.

"Squares on Squares"  From the Japanese Temari Book Cosmo 6, page 5, #4

Materials:  3” Styrofoam ball, 300 yards White sewing thread, Sulky fliament for mark lines, matching metallic braid,
#5 Black Perle Cotton

1.  Wrap mari with white thread.  With paper tape measure and divide mari into 8 Complex Divisions.  Stitch mark lines with Sulky filament.  Tack intersections.

2.  On all “+” (webmaster's note: the + means the right-anlge intersection) lines through the poles, measure the point half way between the pole and obi.  Mark with a pin.  Hold a straight edge across two adjacent pins.  Where the pin crosses the adjacent diagonal mark lines, place a Red pin.  Test the squareness of these mark pins by wrapping a piece of thread around all 4 pins.  Adjust Red pins until an accurate square is formed.

3.  Using paper tape divide all 8-line intersections into 16.  Stitch with Sulky filament.  Tack center again.

4.  Identify the 6-line intersections.  There should be a Red pin on 3 of those mark lines.  The mark lines on either side of those marked with Red pins should intersect the remaining 3 mark lines of the 6-line intersection.  Place Blue pins at those intersections.  If you are still with me   :>)  you should see a hexagon formed by alternating Red and Blue pins around the 6-line intersection.

5.  Stitch that hexagon with 1 round of Black Perle Cotton.  Repeat on all other 6-line intersections.

6.  Using the square you Red pinned in #2, stitch a Black square 5-7 rounds wide outlined with 1 round of metallic braid.  Repeat squares on the remaining five 8-line intersections.

7.  Identify the 2-line “+” intersection between the worked Black squares.  On either side of the “+” place a pin where the diagonal mark line crosses the horizontal line.  Measure to be sure it is equidistant from the “+” interxections.  Stitch a square [4 Black, 1 metallic].  (This square overlaps the Red pinned squares from #6 and the hexagons from #7.)

8.  Repeat #7 around all “+” intersections.

Option:  If mark lines are stitched in Perle Cotton which matches the squares, work a Hexigon around the 6-line intersections before working the #7 Squares.
