Glenna likes to experiment through different themes of temari and recently did a series of temari in a study of black and white. She shares a number of her intepreted patterns with us.

4 Square, from   Cosmo 3, page 32, bottom right

Materials:  3” Styrofoam ball, 300 yards black sewing thread, #5 Black Pearl Cotton, White rayon floss, Gold metallic braid

1.  Wrap mari with black sewing thread.  With paper tape measure and divide mari for 8CD.  Stitch mark lines with Black Pearl Cotton.  Identify the 4-line intersections which form “+” and place a pin.

2.  Hold together 5 White floss lengths to determine the width of the squares.  Place them adjacent to the “+” marker pin. Now lay those cords across the end of the paper tape and mark the place with a pencil.   Use that marked measure to place a pin on the mark line inward toward the 8-line intersection from each “+” intersection.   Repeat and pin mark the other 7 mark lines.

3.  Stitch a large square 4-6 rounds of White rayon floss outlined by Gold braid.  Begin at the pin marks placed in #2.  When finished the square corner should almost touch the “+” intersection.

4.  Work exactly the same square (size and colors) on the 4 alternate mark lines.  Interlock the second square by stitching under the left and over the right sides.  Repeat on the other 5 8-line intersections.
You should now have six faces showing two interlocked Squares.

5.  With paper tape measure the distance on the mark line from the 8-line intersection to the inside edge of the interlocked squares.  Divide that length in half and place a pin at that point on the “+” lines.  Those pins will be the center of 4 small squares.

6.  Stitch squares 3-5 rounds wide leaving a small black square of wrap thread showing through the center.  Hold some floss lengths in place to determine the width.  Outline each small square with Gold.

Each interlocked square should now contain 4 small squares in the center.  If the mark lines interfere with the effectiveness of the design, remove them.
