All Bands

Source: ISBN 4-8377-0283-0 Cosmo 5, pg. 2 ball #5

I worked this design first in stripes of indigo and white for the March 2005 GITS, then did a version with a different color for each band. The pictures in these instructions are from the second version. (Note the color differences from the different lighting during photography.) More variations are possible and are described or pictured at the end of the document.

1. Mark a C-8 in an inconspicuous or removable thread. I used a double strand of the wrap thread and did not remove it. It is very hard to see so I left the pins at the 8 centers until I stitched in each of those areas. You will need to judge the width of the band based on the size of the mari. If your band gets too wide the stitches will slide off the ball. The indigo sample is an 8 cm diameter mari with 13 rounds of #8 silk perle, the multi sample is a 6.8 cm diameter mari with 7 rows of #5 silk perle.

2. Locate the ‘straight’ lines of the square at the North pole. In all cases your stitches will be on the straight lines and the thread will travel along the diagonal line to the opposite pole. Stitch the orange band first (see diagram below, left) followed by the interlocking yellow band.

For the interlocking band, come up at the starting point, go over the red band, follow the diagonal line to the South pole and go under the red band before taking your stitch, then go over the red band and travel back to the North pole again going under the band before completing the stitch. Use this sequence for all of the 2 band intersections.

3. After working the first two bands, rotate the ball to work the blue and brown bands. (See left photo for direction) The blue and brown intersection will be as described above. Use the second  photo leftbelow to make sure you go over and under the existing red and yellow bands correctly.

4. Work the last two bands, purple and yellow/pinkish. These will cross the others at 3- way intersections. Those intersections have an established over/under sequence from the previous two bands so keep that in mind as you weave.
5. Remove marking threads if necessary and embellish the negative space as desired. I really liked to leave my negative space blank. The original version in the book was heavily filled with parallel gold straight stitches.

The red, white, blue example below needed the negative space embellishments. Variations to try: Alternating stripes of color (book reference and indigo/white ball). A different color on each band (pictured at beginning) Layer solid color bands instead of weaving (see picture below) Layer striped bands (red, white and blue below) Use a more complex weaving pattern at the intersection such as over 2 under 2. (not pictured)
