Temari Pattern 99AL01
Beginner to Advanced Beginner Pattern contributed by Andrea Lewis

Andrea asked the Talk Temari list if anyone had the "code" for this ball from the Cosmo book - well, it turned out that we coaxed her into cracking the code herself! And that having been accomplished with some help from Sue D on the list, Andrea and Sue share their results here for you.

Says Andrea, "This pattern is straight out of Cosmo 2, pp 22-24 (ISBN4-8377-0280-5). It is covered with 12 kikus stitched in double thread in 12 diamond or kite shapes.  I used a charcoal thread wrap, white, a light purple, a medium purple and red."

1) Divide a 29 cm mari into a C8.  Now turn your mari so that you're looking at one of the diamond or kite shapes.  It should have 4 spokes.  You will add two extra complete wraps around the mari, each bisecting the diamond.  This will give you 8 spokes. Then, to add the rest of the spokes, you'll have to zigzag your way around the ball, taking a stitch at each intersection.  When you're finished, you will have 12 equal (well, in my case mostly equal  ) diamonds, each with 12 spokes.

2) Measure and pin 2/3 out from the center of each diamond on all spokes.  Measure out 1 cm from the center on alternate spokes.  (I pinned and stitched one kiku at a time to avoid tangles.)  Thread your needle with your first color.  Use double thread.  Choose a beginning pin and stitch one round of a kiku, making sure your double thread lies flat. (It helps to pull your thread pretty tight and use your thumb to hold it down snugly as you stitch.)  Pin the spokes you haven't stitched yet and keep on going!  Repeat this twice, once in each of your two other colors.  Make sure you take your last stitches as close to the edge of the marker threads as you can.  Stitch the remaining 11 (!) kikus.

3) For the outlining, thread your needle with a long length of double thread in your fourth color.  Turn your temari so that you're looking at 3 kikus - one lying horizontally at the top with the other two tilting at an angle underneath.   Can you see the rounded triangle surrounding these three?

Begin your stitching at a point where the marker threads intersect.  Take your thread around this triangle inside the marker lines of your diamonds.  Repeat this process, turning and always orienting yourself to this 3-kiku pattern.  Your threads will begin to intersect.  Where they do, weave them first over, then under the adjacent threads.  You're all done!
