Temari Pattern 85
(Intermediate)
This pattern is worked off of a C8 division, but with added marking lines. It still is not much more difficult, and gives quite impressive results. It can be worked in any number of colors - here is it worked in mostly red and royal blue, with a few rows of the matching medium purple that the mari is wrapped in separating them. There is a row of gold metallic in-between each color section, and a final one around the outer row.

Prepare a regular C8 division. Then, with an additional marking thread, work the dotted lines, which divide each section of a 6 point pole in half. The marking lines will be mostly worked over, so they will not be visible after the ball is completed. You can work the lines in the same thread as the original marking lines, or in a thread matching the mari wrap.

You will now begin to work the pattern blocks. There will be twelve blocks per cycle, working a block in each direction (north, south, east and west) around each of the North and South poles.
Locate points 1 through 4, beginning close to the main marking lines and stitching around the additional lines. Turn the ball with each stitch so that where you are stitching "points up". The stitches for points 3 and 4 on each block will fall on the opposite side of the obi from the pole you are working from.

Work four blocks around the north pole - you will form a cross at the pole, then work four blocks around the south pole. Again, you will form a block around the pole, and you will overlap the stitched lines from the opposite pole's blocks. Then work a cycle around the obi. Place marker pins of different colors at your starting points so that you can repeat the cycles in proper order. You will see the crosses and squares form around each c8 center, and the triangle/diamond will form out of the die overlaps due to the roundness of the ball.

As you stitch, the motifs will extend to form a diamond around point A. Work the pattern repeating the cycle blocks until you have closed in on this point as closely as you desire - you can work till it fills in. or leave the center open a bit.

If you like work a final round on each block in metallic highlight.
