An easy pattern to work that give very rich results. It can be done in all pearl cotton or have some metallic added in. This Temari as pictured uses both - bands of pearl cotton outlined on both sides with metallic pearl. |
| This ball can be worked on any size - but two and a half to three inches
gives the best results. Prepare and wrap the mari and then divide it into
simple fourths. You may wish to use a very fine metallic thread to mark,
or even the same color as the base mari wrap. These options will give one
effect - using a contrasting color will give another - since that will
be visible in the center of each color band after it is complete - but
remember that it will be only in the very middle of the full band in each
direction.
Depending on the number of colors you choose to use and the size of the mari, you can choose from two to four wraps of thread in each band. In addition, each band of color is bordered with either a metallic wrap or contrasting wrap so you need to bear this in mind when deciding on the number of rounds for each band. This is a 2 1/2 inch ball, and I used two wraps of each color sandwiched in-between border wraps of metallic pearl. Three colors are placed symmetrically on each side of the marking thread. Choose a line to begin on, wrap one round of metallic pearl, two of dark green and one of metallic pearl. Repeat on the opposite side of the same marking thread in the same direction. Now wrap one round of metallic pearl, two of medium blue and one of metallic pearl. Repeat on next to the wraps on the opposite side of the marker thread. Repeat this process with the third color - light green. You will now have one full band wrapped on the ball - in-between each color set is two rounds of metallic. But - from here on you need to remember to consider those metallic rounds to border each color band, and that they all go together - one metallic, two color and one metallic. Now choose another direction of marker thread, and repeat the process - but now as you wrap, use the eye of your needle to weave the bands, as shown in the photo - and remember to keep the border metallics woven with their respective color bands. Repeat in the third and last direction - you are finished. Depending on the size of your temari, you may need to tack the outer threads on the rounds to hold them in place.
