Temari Pattern 0512
Intermediate / Download PDF file of this pattern

This pattern is from a design seen in the Temari notebook of Sue H., from her lessons through the JTA while living in Tokyo. Sue graciously allowed me to copy the page and then work up the pattern, so we present it here as a joint effort. It's one of the traditional patterns taught in the courses Sue took at the Tokyo Union Church Women's Society where the JTA holds its classes.

You'll need a C8 prepped mari - but match the marking thread to the wrap to make the division threads invisible. Four colors of pearl cotton were used here as well as a coordinating metallic. The background color of pearl cotton is the same as the mari wrap. This is about a 2 3/4 inch diameter mari. Number of rounds will vary depending on the size of the mari.

Begin by locating the eight large triangles that work quarters around the north and south poles. Starting halfway between the center of the triangle (six center pole) with the background pearl cotton color (dark green here) stitch points A, B, C back to A and work almost out to the marking lines.  Repeat this in each of the eight major triangles on the ball.
To work the centers of the triangles (the hexagons), begin at the center point (the 6pt intersection) and stitch a hexagon, starting as close to the center as you can. Be sure to keep even tension and not pull the stitches too tight so that you skew the marking lines off orientation. This example shows 6 rounds of dark orange. As you continue to work the hexagon you will approach the threads of the large triangles you stitched. When you reach them, begin stitching in between them, as shown in the diagram (note the dot and dash orange lines being placed between the dotted green lines). Changing colors as you wish, work the hexagon out to within two rows of the solid triangles. Repeat the hexagons on each of the eight triangles.  To add the solid accent lines, enter your contrast thread at point A in the photo above - at the midpoint of the hexagon side. Bring it to the right and take it down at the corner of the hexagon, in between the color change rows at Point B. Repeat around on all sides of each hexagon in each triangle.

If desired, you can add metallic accent rows around each of the large triangles, and/or remove your C8 marking lines.
