This design can be worked in a large size as shown, or worked in smaller sizes for pattern elements. It appears in several Japanese books including but not limited to ISBN4-8377-0591-X Zoku Temari Junikagetsu ( Temari for Twelve Months, Vol 2 ) and ISBN4-8377-0890-0 Kyodo no Temari ( Folk Craft Temari ). It's been requested several times from website readers. At first look it may seem that the design is made up several shapes stitched independently, but in reality it is one thread start to finish. Prepare a C8 Mari. Normally it's been worked in pearl cotton 5 and the number of total rounds will depend on the depth of the pattern desired as well as the size of the mari. Several colors can be worked in the successive rounds, or this element also works up great using variegated thread. The choice is yours. This particular example is worked in Omega Nylon variegated on a 2 3/4 inch diameter mari. |

The design is worked on the center of a C8 face. The example shows the design worked on two opposite faces, with embellishment in the remaining white spaces. The element can also be adjusted to be done on a smaller scale within the faces so as to work more elements on the ball. Either wa, the process is the same. Locate one of the six poles of a C8 division. Locate points 1 through 8, and stitch the pattern following these points. The design will work outward from the center and interweave as it progresses. The final round may be worked in a metallic accent thread. Repeat the element on the opposite pole. Embellish the remaining space on the mari as desired; the example shows interwoven spindles worked on each of the remaining poles. Alternatively, sprays of long straight stitches may be used for an effective outcome. |
