Five and Six Point Stars

This is a commonly seen design, and can be found in many Japanese books, websites and other references. It came up on TalkTemari about how to work it, and we realized that it's a basic that had not previously been added to the TK index. It actually could be considered a very basic multipole even though it's not approached in a traditional multipole process. This simpler version uses a C10, stitching stars around the pentagon centers and the six point centers.

It can be worked on almost any size mari, but we suggest at least a 2 1/2 inch diameter mari with Pearl Cotton 5. You can adjust thread and mari sizes accordingly. You can use one or more colors, varying as you desire. More than one color will establish a nice result from the interwoven basis of the design.

Wrap a mari and mark for a C10. The marking threads will become the "centers" of the stars, whether you further embellish the centers or not, so choose your marking thread accordingly. Using the same marking thread add additional marking lines as shown by the dotted lines, using points a, b, c, d, e and back to a. Repeat this around each pole center on the mari.

The design is composed of interwoven stars formed around pentagons and hexagons. The five point stars are worked around each of the natural centers of the C10 division, placing the points close to the pole and the bottom points of the  first round 1/2 way between the pole and next intersection point - Points A, B, C through J, back to A to form the red stars in the diagram (s). Work one round on each of the 12 pentagon centers.  Locate the six point stars that are formed around points 1 through 12 back to 1; place the stitches close to the pole and the bottom points of the first round 1/2 way between the pole and next intersection point. Work one round on each 6 point center around the ball.

Repeat a round on the five point stars, and then again on the six point stars - continue to build up the layers for the interwoven design until the desired depth of design is achieved - usually this is three to five rounds, but it will depend on the size of the mari and thread.  Embellish the centers of the stars if you desire, for example with short straigh starbust stitches, or french knots.
