Shinshu Flower

From the Japanese book Shinshu Temari / Unbelievable temari from Nagano. ISBN# 4-8377-0597-9 Photo: Ball 11 page 5. Pattern page 40 - 41.

The Japanese book calls for this to ball to be stitched on a 41cm ball. That converts to just over 5inch diameter. I stitched mine on a 3-½ inch diameter and could not get the full color effect, as I had to reduce the number of rows even though I used a thinner Kyo thread.

You will need 1 skein each of a light, medium and dark color for the flowers.

Use the Uwagake Chidori Stitch for this pattern

1. Prep and mark a C10 add extra guidelines using a thin metallic. See diagram 1.

a. Stitch an offset pentagon within each pentagon.  Add extra guidelines to make each 10 pole into a 20 pole.

Note. I used different colors for the standard C10 marking and the extra guidelines. It was easier to see which lines to stitch on.

2. Star: Starting with the dark color, stitch 2 rows each of a five-pointed star.

Start the points at the flat side of the off-set pentagon so that the star points line up with the original C10 pentagons. See diagram 2

3. Large Border: Stitch a wide petal flower with the points directly below the five-pointed star.

Starting with the light color stitch 3 rows of light and 3 rows of medium, and 2 rows of dark. See diagram 3.

4. Inner Petals.

Stitch a wide petal flower with the points located between the petals of the large border.

Starting with the light color stitch 2 rows of light, 2 rows of medium and 1 row of dark. See diagram 4.

The ball is done.
