Joan's Request  Cosmo Book 3, page 69, Temari on Right. Joan requested this as a TT Stitchalong for the group, and she with several other folks brainstormed out the two variations shown in the Cosmo 3 book on the listed page (there were a pair, each a different variation).

Debi A. was the compiler to pull the contributed info and thoughts into cohesive patterns.

1.  Mark a C8 in inconspicuous thread.

2.  Add support lines as shown in diagram with dotted lines.  (The lines come to the halfway point on the diagonals of the square, they do not just cut across the square corners.)

3.  Stitch design shapes (large square shown in blue (1) on the diagram, and wrapped bands shown in red (2) on the diagram)
4.  Stitch background shapes (small squares (shown in blue and green in the diagram (3) and triangles (shown in purple (3) in the diagram)

5.  Repeat steps 3 and 4 once, and then repeat them again with reversed colors.  The design squares work inward (shitagake stitching) and the bands and background shapes work outward.

6.  Finish filling in background.

Note:  The order of colors might have to be adjusted based on the size ball you are using.  The green and pink sample is done on a 30.5cm circumference mari.

The multi colored ball is color coded based on the way the elements of the design come together: The yellow triangles are where 3 corners come together. The blue squares are defined by the wrap elements.  The Red squares are defined by both wrap and squares. Joan suggested making a small square template to help in keeping the squares 'square' since it is difficult to place the support lines and maintain them.
