Kaleidoscope #1

Joan Z., like many Temari people, shares a love of Kaleidoscope images, and likes to create computer-generated Kscope graphics. She also likes to convert them to temari designs - many times sharing and working the process with the TT list. Bringing the design to the list and having other folks help it along is a great exercise for us all. Joan shares the first of these here - it represents the contributions of several members of the TT list and Joan summarized those notes into this pattern writeup.

This example by Joan uses  a 4-inch diameter Styrofoam ball for the base. You will need black pearl cotton plus 5 colors (first and last row of each color section begins and ends with black). Prep and mark an S16 with 8 alternate lines being the same color as the mari and the other 8 in metallic of your choice. Add obi marking line in metallic.
Measure ½ way between obie and the north pole and add an extra guide line around the mar, parallel to your obi. Repeat this at the south pole.

All stitching and wrapping for this size mari with pearl cotton #5 is 10 row, beginning and ending with black.

Stitch an open (wide) 8 pointed star around both poles (shown in blue in the photo): On the metallic guidelines place a pin ½ way between the pole and your extra guideline. This will be the upper points of the star. On the mari-color guidelines measure 1.5 cm up from the added guideline. This will be the lower points and give you room to stitch 10 rows with # 5 pearl. You may stitch all points in a zig-zag stitch (shitagake chidori) or use uwagake chidori (as shown in the photo). If you chose to use uwagake chidori make the cone widen with every stitch so that the uwagake chidori points match the lower, downward points. See photo.

Stitch Hexagons: Where the extra metallic guideline crossed a mari-colored guideline, measure 1 cm out from each side and place yellow pins. On the next mari-colored guideline measure 1cm out from each side and place green pins. Continue around the mari, alternating yellow and green pairs of pins. You should now have 4 pairs of yellow pins and 4 pairs of green pins. Stitch the 4 Yellow-pin Hexagons first. See photo.

You will need to weave the Green-pin hexagons over the yellow pin hexagons and under the star points. When passing under the star points bury your thread in the thread wrap until your stitches are above the V of the star. (For me only the last 2 rows were above the V)

Obi: Wrap an obi band crossing over and under every other pair of hexagons. Measure 1cm up from the edge of the wrapped obi band and wrap another band on each side of the obi with the opposite weave of your obi band. I found I needed to anchor this wrap with a black V at the places it passed over the hexagons. Embellish the poles, and the ball is done.
