Gold Star

This is a simple design that is easily made, and creates an attractive pattern. The metallic yarns make it quick to finish and charming. This temari was inspired by a pattern that emerged while stitching another temari, one of those ‘I wonder what will happen if I just…’. The goal of this experiment was the creation of the negative star in the center of the pattern.

The design is worked in metallic yarns found at a craft show;  Shelley believes that they were actually intended for knitting, but seemed ideal for temari work. This pattern used the gold and as an accent the bronze colored metallic yarns and white embroidery thread.

Marking and preparation: This is a C8 pattern that is sub divided. This temari was a 25cm circumference and was wrapped in a medium blue thread. A white thread was used to mark the divisions, and these lines became part of the pattern.

The green lines in the diagram at left show the extra marking lines added to the  basic C8 needed for this pattern.

The lighter blue lines in the diagram show the first row of pattern stitching. The inner points of the star shape are 1cm from the center along the extra marking lines, and the outer points are 2cm from the center along the original marking lines. A white embroidery thread was used for the first pattern line.

The next 5 rows were stitched to frame the white star. The metallic yarn was used,  leaving spaces between the rows to create a lacy effect.

The last row used the dark bronze metallic yarn. Notice that the pattern only touches the outside square along the flat side.
