Hi everyone, I hope that all are well....

As we have discussed in the past, the timing for the Calls for Applicants for working with Ai for the Japan Temari Association Certification exams would continue to become earlier as we gain more people that are both interested in starting certification as well as those that wish to advance (which involves more prep and translation time).

For those interested, please read the information about JTA Certification on Temarikai.com

http://www.temarikai.com/japantemariassocinfoapply.html

and also be sure to click over and read the information page on Ai's site (linked from the page on Temarikai.com).

**) - Level 3 / Shihan - If you wish to apply for Level 3 / Shihan (Teacher), (which is also what qualifies you to teach temari under the JTA name), you need to have completed Level 2 / Koutouka, in 2007 or earlier (there is a mandatory minimum 2 year study period after completing Koutouka before you may apply for Shihan), and you need to have maintained your JTA membership since joining.
Please send me an email with your intent to apply for the 2009 class to  gthompson@temarikai.com, by October 15, 2008, subject line JTA Shihan 2009. The Shihan applicants group will be formed and begin working with Ai within the next 2 weeks.

**) - Level 1 / Honka and Level 2 / Koutouka may be applied for based on your ability to work the required submissions, but usually after at least one year of temari experience. You must join the JTA if you are beginning with Level 1, and you must have maintained your JTA membership if you are applying for Level 2.
Level 1 and Level 2 may be applied for at the same time, but you may not apply for Level 2 alone without having first attained level 1. If you wish to apply for Level 1 / Honka  and/or Level 2 (Koutouka), please send me an email at gthompson@temarikai.com by October 31, 2008. The Honka and Koutouka groups will be formed early in November.

Please be sure to read and understand the requirements, procedures and commitment - both time and skill as well as financial, that you are taking on by applying, as they are described on the pages on TemariKai.com and Ai's site. We will be able to help and clarify things for you as needed but you should be clear as to what is involved - please ask if you have any questions.

If we have more applicants than can be managed, there will be a Notarized lottery by a licensed CPA to determine the class members...

Remember the signup deadlines - October 15 for Level 3/Shihan, and October 31 for Level 1/Honka & Level 2/Koutouka.

Good luck and have fun!! Earning JTA certification is your commitment to continuing the traditional ethnic art of Japanese Temari, keeping this historical folk art alive and growing.

Here's to the Temarikai.com JTA Class of 2009...
Thanks for your continued interest and support,
Ginny T

I hope all are well. Summer has sped past - life has been a bit feisty here but settling down again so I've had some time to get to work on Temarikai, finally. Many folks have had challenges with floods, storms, fires... and now are facing hurricane season. Let's all hope for safety for all...   As promised in the spring, Temarikai would be undergoing some "tuneups" - it's hard to think that we are coming up to ten years of being online. Thanks to all of the many folks that have participated and still do, Temarikai keeps growing, and we're in the process of getting things consolidated into a more usable format - again :>).

*) You will find that the How To Section is being rebuilt - rather than a alpha listing of page titles, things are broken down into sections by topic which should hopefully make things a bit more intuitive to find what you are looking for. Some of the core pages of information have been reworked as well - including mari making, wrapping, dividing, marking, using rice hulls, and inserting noisemakers. The page reworks is an ongoing process -the ones that have been done are marked with an asterisk. For those that still want to plow through the old alpha listing, you can still access it - there is a link on the bottom of the new How To section contents. You'll see more action on pages being cleaned up in the short term coming...

*) There is updated information regarding getting in touch with and placing orders with Sophia Books, in Vancouver BC Canada... check out the Sophia Books page in Resources on Temarikai.com
http://www.temarikai.com/sohpiajapanesebooklist.html

*) There are a few new patterns on page 8 of the Temarikai.com pattern index...
http://www.temarikai.com/temaripatternsindex08.html
and there is also a new pattern in the StitchAlong section, a simple but elegant sakura (cherry blossom) design. Click on the StitchAlongs Page for this one
http://www.temarikai.com/temaripatternsindexSA01.html

*) New Scissor Lanyards are finally in and available... and with them we introduce the motto of TemariKai.com - visit the Shop page and click on the Lanyard info to learn about "Stitch Temari, Share the Wa".

*) VRulers are in stock - but please, contact by email to be sure and that I hold one for you... they can sell out in a day so please don't send the SASE and payment without checking...
http://www.temarikai.com/jpnseanglemeasurepurchase.htm

*) Remember the Call for Photos for the 2009 Temarikai Calendar is open... without photos, no calendar. Everyone is very much invited to participate - beginners as well, and even if you have had a temari photo included in the past, you are still urged to submit. It's not about the "biggest, best, most complicated" temari - we hope for a good range and mix of styles, designs, etc. The calendar will be available for holiday gifting and as always a portion of the proceeds goes to Sarah's Book Project (which has to date gifted over $2000.00 to Dana Farber Cancer Institute) Info is available on the link from the homepage
http://www.temarikai.com/calendarinfo.html
The call closes October 31 so, get the cameras clicking and send those photos on along!! :>)

And please,  as September 11 draws in on us this week, let us all pause to remember those (from around the world) that were impacted either with loved ones on the planes or in the buildings, all that worked so endlessly to help in the aftermath, and all of the service personnel (and families) that have been deployed around the world in the times that have followed. And let us all, everywhere, hope and work for peace in this world.

that's it for now - thanks for your ongoing support and interest,
Ginny T

It's been a busy time with the annual TalkTemari NY Stitchin - held here in NY the weekend of April 18-20. We had a great time, super weather and lots of fun sharing. Fifteen TT members arrived for the 7th annual gathering, from 13 states of the US, Sweden and The Netherlands. It's always so hard to believe that three months of planning whizzes past in three days, but tghey were busy and fun ones. You can read all about it, the reviews of those that attended and view the photos on Temarikai.com -

http://www.temarikai.com/StitchIns/TemNY2008/temariny2008review1.html

Even though things have been a bit quiet on the site due to the StitchIn, we do have new patterns, thanks to Terry, Linda, Sandy and Joan -
find them on page 8 of the Temarikai pattern index:

http://www.temarikai.com/temaripatternsindex08.html

We do still have some VRulers available.

That's it for now - more coming soon.
Thanks for your ongoing support and interest,
Ginny T.

You can link to the Temari Shop on Cafe Press through the Shop section of TemariKai.com, or go directly via

*) There are three new patterns added to TemariKai.com's Patterns section - which also inaugurates the 8th - 8th!! page of contributed temari pattern interpretations for everyone to share and enjoy. Find Page 8 in the Patterns Section of TemariKai.com -  http://www.temarikai.com/temaripatternsindex08.html   Thanks to Sandy, Glenna and Joan for the three latest,  and also a very deep and ongoing thanks to all who continue to share and grow the online resources for all temari stitchers. Without everyone, none of us would be where we are now.

*) V Rulers are on order - there are a few still available from the current batch but, the new order will be here in about 2 weeks. I'll keep you posted.

***)...And!! - drum roll time....  the long awaited and eagerly  anticipated announcement that Diana Vandervoort's fifth book - Temari Gifts: Japanese Thread Balls and Jewelry - can now be made!! It's a beautiful book, the photography spectacular, and I believe you'll enjoy it. Diana returns to the traditional roots in terms of temari projects (the adhoc stuff in the last two books wasn't her ideea -  it was the publisher's push without much wiggle room, with them thinking readers  wanted "fast projects" versus more traditional and authentic temari instruction and applications. That's one reason why this book has taken longer to bring to life, since she changed publishers). We are not to be disappointed in the wait -  beginners as well as more advanced stitchers will find material and projects worthwhile.

If you are wondering how we've got some of the inside scoop -  Diana came to me over a year ago and asked me to help with technical editing and review. I replied that as one of her students, and with it being because of her books that I found and began learning the craft, I wasn't sure I was in a place to be "editing" her, but I would do what I could to help. She was keen to hear both my personal comments of her works as well as - even more - what the overall temari community has had to say about her first four. Without a doubt, she was most interested in the "critiques" so that she could improve on this and future writings. We've spent many hours (thank goodness for the web and phones!) sharing (and learning) together. (I know that many people have been asking when/if the 5th book was going to come out, and while I've tried to keep you updated I was also bound to honor Diana's confidence regarding her personal and business progress.

While I very much encourage you to add it to your temari library, I make it clear that I have no stake in any form in its (or any of her other endeavors) sales, or am receiving any form of compensation; we simply worked together as friends and colleagues, with joy and pleasure. Temari Gifts is available and shipping directly from Diana's website: http://temari.com/store.htm  BUT  - please note that Diana will be away from March 13th through March 28th, 2008. She asked me to forward the info she will ship books in the sequence as orders were placed, upon her return.

That's it for now - thanks for your ongoing support and interest, and be well.

Ginny T.

here we go on a few updates to TemariKai.com

In Resources, you will find a page on general needle info and care, and also comparing Japanese to Western needles - and whether there is a specific "temari" needle...

How To has a page on Obi-oriented patterns - when an obi is an obi (and when it might not be!)....

Things Japanese has two new pages on some cultural info - New Year customs in Japan, as well as the annual Needle Memorial Ceremony.

Patterns has an addition to Temari Egg designs, thanks to Pat L; You'll also find a fun little thing that comes out of TalkTemari - the Smorgasball Temari (which will challenge your creative juices a bit...)

TalkTemari members will find updated support help for using TalkTemari in the TT section

I'm very pleased - and thank you all deeply - to let everyone know that the 2007 figures are in and, Temarikai will be sending another $193.40US to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA, on behalf of the Sarah's Book Project (full proceeds of Sarah's Book, and 30 percent of proceeds of calendars and screensavers). These items continue to be available through the Shop page on TemariKai.com

More V Rulers are coming.... Scissor Lanyards are sold out.

Additions to the Pattern Index are in the works as we speak - as well as the ToolKit....

Thanks for your continued support and interest -
Be well and stay safe,

===============

I'd like to take a moment to wish everyone a happy, safe and prosperous New Year. Many folks in many parts of the world have faced challenges this year - let us hope that life is coming back together (if however slowly, there is still progress), and that 2008 is a bit kinder.

I thank you for your continued support and interest in TemariKai.com - many good things happened in 2007 but the year also found me lagging on many due to chronic health problems being out of synch; the whack last winter in reality took until the middle of this fall to truly get worked out, and the medications fine tuned. The plans on the drawing board for TK unfortunately for the most part got stuck there but, thankfully are taking wing again. Thanks for your patience and you can indeed look forward to expanding content on the site.

You'll also be noticing that things will again be "overhauling"  - no major upheavals but, as will happen with something like Temarikai it does require that every so often we regroup and consolidate...  hopefully it will all be for the better. Nothing will be eliminated or "moved" - just cleaned up and made more user friendly. Because of the contributory nature of the site, things periodically get a bit unwieldy and it's time to glue it all back together :>P

As the year changes over I wish you and those you love peace, good health, and happiness in all the days to come... and look forward to us all continuing to share this are we love.

Be well,
Ginny T
