Temari Southern Style - Red and Black Squares

This ball is based on a C8 division. The picture above was done on a 3 inch base showcasing the use of omega nylon in a design. The pattern is certainly suitable for a smaller ball and other threads.

Prepare a 3 inch ball and mark in gold thread a C8 division. Starting at the north pole, pick any marking line. With red thread wrap 4 rounds on one side of the marking
thread and 4 rounds on the other side.
Now pick the marking thread that is 90 degrees to the one you just used and wrap 4 rounds of red thread being careful to weave OVER the first band, UNDER the next, OVER the next etc. Repeat 4 rounds on the other side of the marking thread but this time go UNDER the band where you previously went over and OVER the band where you previously went under etc. Find the obi and wrap 4 rounds of red thread again going OVER, UNDER bands being careful that where you go OVER is where the last crossing on that band was UNDER etc. Repeat on other side of obi.

Now you are ready for the black squares. See diagram to the left; with black thread, come up outside but close to the red basket woven square of bands ON THE GOLD MARKING THREAD THAT BISECTS TWO GROUPS OF RED BANDS. Go under one band, over the next, taking a stitch at the next bisecting gold thread, go over one band, under the next etc., for 7 rounds. Stitch 3 rounds of white thread and more round of black thread. Repeat on 5 other groups of basket woven bands.
