Temari Southern Style - Four Centers  "Cheat Ball"
Copyright Martine Hinrichs 2002

This is an easy way to be able to identify four centers and/or 4 equally spaced triangles divided on a mari.

In picturing 4-centers poles and spaces, it's  find it helpful to keep an unwrapped mari ball with the lines drawn on it in magic marker. Many call it a "four centers cheat ball".

Prepare your four-centers "cheat ball" in this manner. On a 4 inch styrofoam ball (dyalite is easier to draw on but sometimes hard to find), draw the lines of a C8 division. NO, you don't have to be perfect-just eyeball where they would go, and draw them on. With a blue magic marke m
ake a big blue dot at the north pole. With a red marker, make a big red dot at the south pole.

Holding the ball with the north pole up, notice the square formed around the north pole by the division lines. With a blue marker start at the top right corner of the square and draw diagonally to the bottom left corner of the square. Making a 90 degree turn toward the right and heading downward to the south pole (but not to it)-continue drawing the blue line  untilyou reach the bottom left of the next square, Turning 90 degrees and diagonally up and to the right continue drawing the blue line until you reach the point where you started. Congratulations, you have just identified the first of 4 triangles, the center of which is one of the four-centers centers.

Keeping the ball with the north pole on top, turn the ball so the triangle you just identified is on the back side of the ball (away from you), With a green marker, draw a line diagonally across the ball following the first blue line you drew till you get to the same bottom right corner of the square around the north pole. Turn 90 degrees and diagonally go down and to the right till you hit the bottom right corner of the next square. Turn 90 degrees and go diagonally up the ball and to the left till you hit the point where you started the green triangle. TWO TRIANGLES FOUND AND MARKED!! Turn you ball over so the south pole is now at the top. Find the square around that pole and with a red marker go across that square diagonally BUT 90 degrees opposite of the diagonal line crossing the north pole square. Follow the blue line to the corner of the next square, turn 90 degrees and follow the green line to the point where you started. 3 TRIANGLES MARKED! With a 4th color mark the last triangle-do it-don't be lazy-mark it so you can see it.You did it.
