Kiyoko
Tibbets of Sophia Books in Vancouver had delivered the good news to me
a bit ago that there was a new Temari book coming out in Japan, written
by Sensei Ozaki's daughter. I had pronto reserved a copy whenever she
was able to obtain it from Japan and it's finally here! It arrived
today and Kiyoko asked me to preview and introduce it to the TemariKai
audience which I do with much pleasure and enthusiasm - it's wonderful!
The book is comprehensive in covering
all of the basics in a manner that even without translation from the
Japanese text is quite easy to follow. There is a load of designs and
patterns and unlike some Japanese books, almost all ( I would estimate
90 percent) have included diagrams (some Japanese books are teasers in
that many temari illustrated in the volume carry only text descriptions
and not pattern diagrams), which demonstrate clear approaches to
creating the designs. This is indeed one book that can span the
distance between beginning and more advanced stitchers - it's
appropriate for everyone. The photos and diagrams needed to learn the
basics are clear and concise, there is a good assortment of designs to
work to build on these skills, as well as carrying you through into
more advanced and challenging balls. And, there are summary pages that
show the variations of skills and elements to let your creativity loose
with also.
I am often asked to recommend a
Japanese book - either someone wants to try one, or with pricing
they are needing to zero in and choose one. To my count this makes 30
or 31 books published in Japanese, of which most are how-to (three or
so are more reference and historical) - and now I can finally without
hesitation recommend one, this one fills the needs and would keep most
any temari maker or would-be temari maker happy by both providing the
basics and continuing to offer a challenge. I have no disappointments
whatsoever at having ordered it sight unseen with no other information
other than Kiyoko saying "there is a new book available....." (and
Ginny started jumping for joy through the phone line!) If you
were familiar with the books that Sensei Ozaki had written you can
indeed see the same style and skill in presentation, with even better
detail and clarity. When Kiyoko called to tell me about this book we
both talked about the hope that perhaps Temari is seeing a resurgence
in Japan, or at the least the interest in the west has filtered back in
and that perhaps this signals more to come. This is the first new
publication in at least five years
Current list purchase price from Sophia
Books is $37.50 Canadian plus shipping. Please contact Kiyoko if you
are interested - I believe the current shipment was small but you may
order (a deposit will most likely be required since the Japanese
publishing houses have begun to request payment from Sophia at time of
order). Email Kiyoko at info@sophiabooks.com and remember
to include the word TEMARI in the subject line of your email to be sure
that Kiyoko receives it within the store.
