This temari design for an egg is worked on a 3 inch egg,
using number 4 pearl cotton. Thin metallic is used for marking and
embellishing. The pattern was created as I stitched and as far as I
know was not previously published, but it is a simple combination of
kiku designs. The pattern is worked in Uwagake Chidori Kagari and Kousa Kagari, resulting in layered and interwoven kiku patterns, done in two phases. Mark a wrapped egg into a Simple 12. Mark and obi, and mark the halfway distance between the poles and obi. Work a kiku on each pole using the Uwagake Chidori stitch arrangement, for about four rounds (shown in yellow in the example). For Kousa kagari, begin stitching the top of the stitch
arrangement snuggly into the top of the notch formed from the Uwagake
Chidori from the first section, up close to the bottom of the stitches.
Work one round on the top of the egg, placing the bottom stitch just
below the obi. Repeat on the opposite pole so that the rounds will
overlap
and interweave at the obi, forming the diamonds. Work four to six
rounds; colors of your choice. To finish, work a straight stitch starburst on each pole, and also a round on the first cycle of the kiku design on each pole. For a variation, on the second set of chrysanthemum, work each end separately, interlocking (Nejiri kagari) them at the obi rather than the weaving of alternating them. |
