One of the Talk Temari members is an actuary (she told us once what she did but nobody really got it) and a former math teacher. All of sudden one day Diane realized that no one else of us had this nifty little trick up their sleeves (as most of us are not math people) to use to divid the marking strip into divisions that are not multiples of four (those are very easy to just fold and get). So, from Diane, here you go:
Steps to measuring 12ths, 10ths, 6ths, or anything you can't get by folding:
1.Put paper tape that goes around
temari on long edge of a regular sheet of paper.
2.Put ruler diagonally across paper
going from end of paper tape to edge of paper. See red line on diagram.
3.Line up one end of ruler at end
of paper tape. If measuring for 12ths, put the 12-inch (or some multiple
of 12 somethings for
you metric people) mark
at the other edge of the paper, draw a line along the edge of the ruler
(red line on diagram) and
mark every inch (red
marks). If measuring for 10ths, put the 10-inch mark at the other edge
and mark every inch. If 6ths, put
the 12 inch mark at
the end and mark every two inches. See red line on diagram. You get the
idea!
4.Drop a line from each mark (green
lines) perpendicular (right angle) to the paper tape and parallel to each
other and the short
end of the paper.
5.Your tape is now marked in the
desired divisions!
