Temari Album -Lois' Carousel
Design originally created January 1999

While in the tradition of Japanese master craftsmen and artists none of us in present day would qualify to create our own designs, we nevertheless give it a shot. This pattern is an original of mine, not otherwise published to the best of my knowledge. It was created in honor of a dear friend whose passion is carousels. NEW NOTE: I have received many requests for the directions to make this ball - it is not difficult to follow from the photos, but for verbal instructions, click here.   Want to get a Temari of your own? Here's how...

Directions to make Lois' Carousel: Use a three inch diameter (24 cm circumference) ball. Wrap and divide in vertical 16ths with obi. Mark 1/2 between obi and each pole. Work chrysanthemum/kiku on 8 alternate lines from close to pole to mark pin for up to around nine to twelve rounds. Repeat on opposite pole, using the same 8 lines. For obi,  on alternate lines from the pole work, work kiku from 1/2 to just below obi mark working approximately the same number of rounds that you worked on the canopy (poles). The actual number of rounds for each section is up to you depending on how the appearance of your ball is coming out as well as color and shading selections. Repeat from the opposite direction, weaving under and over as you cross the previously worked obi section.
Outline final round of each section with metallic thread - embellish the pole centers with metallic starbursts (or as you desire).
