TheCombination 8 (or, in Japanese 8-Combination) Division is a one of the  standard divisions in Temari-making . While some patterns call for adding on extra divsions lines etc, virtually all Temari patterns spring from one of these basic divisions. A C8 is "step 2" in learning temari - after you have mastered the basic simple divisions (and you should before moving on) then the next one to learn is the C8. A wonderful world opens up to you when you add combination divides to your repetoire.

The C8 Division begins with marking a Simple 8. To create a Combination 8 you will add 4 diagonal marking lines which will, in conjunction with the vertical lines create a marking that divides the ball into 6 "faces" or main sections, each with its own pole and 8 "spokes" radiating out from those new poles. Each face will be in the shape of a square.

On alternate marking lines, place pins half way between the obi and poles. Here these pins will be referred to as Pins A, B, C, and D for those placed around the North Pole, and Pins A1, B1, C1 and D1 for those placed around the South Pole. Notice the orientation of pairs A-A1, B-B1 etc. in that they are opposite each other on the ball.

Measure off four "wraps" plus a little extra of marking thread.  Enter the thread  at point X (the vertical line that pins A and C1 are on). Wrap the thread to Pin B (place the thread to the "outside" of the pin - between the pin and obi line).

Carry the marking thread to Point Y  directly opposite from where you started this thread.

Continue the thread down to Pin B1 and back up to the starting point X . Anchor the thread but do not cut off.

Wrap the thread diagonally in the other direction, going to Pin D.

Pass by the outside of Pin D between the pin and obi and continue to Point Y.

Wrap down to pin D1 and come back to the starting point X, anchor and end off the thread.

You should have two diagonal wraps in addition to the original simple 8.

Turn the ball a quarter-turn counter clockwise and anchor the marking thread at point 1. Wrap up to Pin A; you will cross your first diagonal intersection from the first wrap.

Pass the thread at Pin A between the pin and obi, continue to point 2 (opposite Point 1).

Continue and cross down to Pin C1; come back up to Point 1.

Tack the thread; wrap in the opposite diagonal direction to Pin C, Point 2, Pin C1 to Point 1. Tack and end off.

Adjust and groom your threads if needed; you should have six squares marked off, each with a pole in the center and 8 spokes radiating out from the pole. Each set of four spokes meet at the pole with an 90 degree angle.

Tack the intersections of the marking threads once you have adjusted the thread positions if needed to keep the threads in proper positioning as you work your temari design.

Notice that on a C8, the markings are symmetrical all over the mari. The pin here has been left in what was the original North Pole position for illustration purpose but it's no longer needed. Essentially there no longer is a "north pole"; there now are six faces on the ball each with its own center pole.

Notice also the other lozenge sections that appear: squares, triangles and diamonds are the main ones; other combinations withing the marking lines can be used to create other shapes. It's these lozenges and sub-sections that are used to create the more varied and intricate patterns on C8 divides.
