The TemariKai
Channel on UStream.tv was created in the summer of 2010 and hosts "TemariKai
Live" on (usually) the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month at
11am EST (New York, USA; -5 GMT or, during Daylight Savings Time/DST,
-4 GMT). These one-hour webcasts give interactive demonstrations
of a stitch, skill, method or design of traditional Japanese Temari
making. The video is oriented so that you see what you would
while working, and many people stitch along with the
presentation. It's an opportunity to connect in real time with
temari makers from around the world.
If you need to convert to your
time zone, check TimeandDate.com.
The
programming
schedule is posted on the TalkTemari Yahoo Group
Calendar, and follow-up discussions happen on TalkTemari, so if you are
interested in the details, please join TalkTemari. Requests for
topics/questions are accepted - email (gttemari@verizon.net) tonput
your request in for consideration. There is also a growing library of
recorded videos demonstrations that can be viewed on-demand on
the channel.
Given Ustream's ad-placement
policy it is strongly suggested that you use
FireFox Browser with the Ad-Block Plus add-in, or Google Chrome browser
with the same add-in. Use "Fanboy's List" for the blocking subscription
(don't be afraid of the name - it's only a list of site sources to
block - there is no "subscribing" in the normal sense). Ad-Block is
available for most all browers except MS Internet Explorer. While
Ustream is ad-supported and everyone accepts that, they can place ads
that pre-empt live and recorded webcasts - it appears to be
(as of this writing) about every 30 minutes - with 15 to 30 second
ads. However, using these browser and addin options allows
viewing without loss
of content, without being forced to submit to UStream's $4.00 per month
charge to view content ad-free. FireFox, Google and Ad Block Plus
with Fanboy Plus are all free downloads, easily available on the
web. Likewise, a basic Ustream account is free.
How UStream works:
*) UStream basics: (please become familiar with the UStream.com site on
your own - it's beyond the reach of TemariKai to provide UStream help
and support).
Bookmark the TemariKai Channel page, and/or add it as one of your
"crowds" in your UStream account.
*) You only need to navigate to the TemariKai Channel on UStream to see
and hear the webcasts (no log-in required). To participate in the live,
on-screen chat during the broadcast you need a (free) UStream account.
There is a topic of the day - a demonstration of a particular, method
or design (usually), accompanied by Q&A in chat. If you are
creating an account for TemariKai Live, consider a user name that lets
us "know" who you are (like your first name & last initial, etc.)
so that it is easy to interact. You must be logged on as an active user
during the broadcast to chat.
*) The Chat Room of the TemariKai Channel is available during the
scheduled webcast times. It opens 15-30 minutes prior to the start of
the stream, and closes at the conclusion of the broadcast. You are
welcome to exchange pleasantries with other viewers until the
start-time of the stream. After the start of the program, please
honor
these rules for the Chat Room: *) keep chat (including questions)
to
the topic of the program. Other questions will be taken as time allows
after we've covered the scheduled topic. *) Allow the moderator(s) to
answer questions, since many people posting can be confusing and
distracting. Open input and opinion is invited each week after the
topics has been completed. *) During the scheduled webcast time,
the
chat room is for TemariKai Live related interaction, not personal chat.
Keep posts relevant to the topic. *) If you join us after the
webcast
has started, please just quietly join in without posting chat
greetings, as it interrupts where things are in the program *) All
communication is conducted in
English.
*) Be logged in and ready to go on time for the start of the program.
If you join us late, you are of course most welcome but please join in
quietly. Hold your greetings till the end, and please don't ask to be
"caught up" with what you missed after the stream has started. We have
people that are taking time out of busy schedules and/or staying up
very late in their local time zones to tune in and we need to move
forward. If time allows at the end of the stream we can review what
might have been missed.
Hints and Tips for UStream:
It's beyond the scope of TemariKai to offer UStream user support or
trouble shooting. Here are some tips, but you need to be comfortable
with Ustream and your computer. We are all to a degree, at the mercy of
the internet and communication cables and signals, as well as local
servers - any or all of which can decide to fundaggle things. I'm using
a high quality HD webcam to provide as smooth a video/audio feed as
possible, and use a wired ethernet fiberoptic broadband connection to
upload the stream, to offer as high quality a stream as possible.
There are a few things you can do to try to maximize your experience on
your end, and they are all easy things to do. Prior to tuning in to the
live stream (like the day before):
*) Be sure to clear the cache and temp files in your browser (check the
help section of your browser for how to do this - it's an easy thing.
It's also something you should do regularly just to keep your browser
running at full speed in general).
*) Clean temp files on your computer (go to Windows or Mac help -
again, it's easy)
*) Use a wired, rather than wireless, router connection to the internet
(not required but may give you a smoother stream).
While watching the live stream:
*) Be sure you don't have a lot of other (or ideally, any) programs
running while you are watching the webcast. This takes resources of
your computer away from giving you a smooth stream.
*) If Ustream "hangs" or things "disappear" - refresh/reload the page
in your browser. If that doesn't help and you are still stuck, close
the browser completely and open it again, and go back to UStream.
When watching the recorded webcasts, if you are having difficulty with
choppy playback take into consideration all of the above and, it may
help to pause the playback for a minute or two, which will allow the
recording to download into your computer. Then you can start playing it
again and it should be clear and smooth. You'll be watching the video
from the "holding files" in your computer rather than as it streams
from the web, so it avoids hangups in the download as you watch it.
