TalkTemari Help and Info
Posting Photos in TalkTemari Yahoo Files
We have a large membership, which
means a lot of photos to share! We use TT file space for not only
sharing photos of our work, but also teaching and projects. That being
said, there is a limited file space allocation on Yahoo (even though
they are a bit more generous than in the beginning) so we need to make
it work for everyone and everything. To access the TT Files, log into
Yahoo with your Yahoo ID and password. When you are on the TT Yahoo
home page, click on FILES in the left hand menu. You will see a
directory page with folders, each of which relates to an activity or
category of photos that are being shared.
First, the basics:
- TalkTemari uses the FILES area of the Yahoo functions - NOT
the PHOTOS section (this conserves file archive space and also helps to
protect your privacy online. Photos uploaded to the PHOTOS section of
the group will not be released for posting), to share photo/image files
with everyone in the group. Please review the following information for
how to do this... and by all means if you have any questions, please
email me at gttemari@verizon.net.
- Since we have a finite amount of file space in Yahoo, everyone
cooperates in using it for sharing current work, group projects, etc.
Everyone is encouraged to establish an on-line photo album with one of
the services out there - such as Flickr or Webshots (choose any of the
many out there) - for long-term showing of your work. That being said, everyone
is invited and should add their current work to the "Current Showcase"
or other appropriate folder (such as GITS or other special project)
whether or not you put them in an online album, since it's much easier
for list members to go to the folders on TT to see our work than to
have to bounce around to forty different online albums :>P.
After a period of time I clean out the folders on TT - but if you have
also added your work to your online album everyone can still find
photos there. When you set up an album, please add the link to the
OnLine Albums Folder in LINKS on TalkTemari Yahoo (or if you have some
other online link for photos, you can also add that).
- If for some reason you cannot set up an online album, you are
welcome to create a file in the TT Members Photos files in FILES on TT
Yahoo.
- We have to limit using the TT files for TT members and projects.
As much as many of us have students and family members that are
learning temari from or with us, the Files in TT are limited to
members' work, not students, family, etc. Sorry - but with so
many members on the list that's the way things need to be. Everyone
still wants to see those other photos, so go grab an online album and
show them off there.... we'll all be cheering everyone on just the same.
- If you are using an online photo album, it's nice to use a sig
file when you post that includes the link to your album, perhaps with
the last update date as well.
Now, prepare your image:
- TalkTemari is about temari - not special photography or special
effects from image editing programs. Yes, doing special shots or funky
things are fun, but those photos need to be shown in your online
albums, not within the TT files (thanks!). If you
enjoy playing with photo effects, you can share those images through an
online photo album. We like to see them - but we don't have the
resources to do it in the TT Files.
- Crop your photo so that the temari is the primary subject and you
are not wasting "image space" on empty background, etc. photos.
- Resize the cropped into to something that comes in at about 100
KB - this means a resolution of 200 pixels (best for computer showing
and printing. Too large only eats file space and too small doesn't show
well), with a maximum dimension in one direction of about 400 pixels.
Please check the file size before you upload it to TT Files and be sure
it's in that range. Big files either have to be edited or deleted...
which means I tend to not be a happy camper :>P.
- Make sure to choose the appropriate folder to upload your photos
to - this is how we stay organized and everyone will be able to find
what they are looking to see. Please ** do not ** just upload image
files to FILES without choosing the folder they need to "live"
in....
"loose files" can end up being deleted so that we don't end up with a
runaway listing. Click on the folder you wish to add your image to (and
there is something that always fits, be it Current Showcase, a GITS in
progress, or a special project being worked on, there will be a folder
available for those photos). Follow the online screen prompts to go to
the image file in your computer with your cursor, and then click
"Add File" on the Yahoo screen. There is online help in Yahoo if you
need it, or I'm happy to help (including prepping and uploading files
for you) if you send an email to gttemari@verizon.net
- RENAME THE FILE! Don't leave it with the filename your camera or
scanner created - it must be id'd with something that links it to you.
Rename your file with something that says it's yours and what it is
about. First of all - you OWN the photo, so don't put it up there
dangling with no one knowing who it belongs to. Photos may be archived
or otherwise saved so it's up to you to identify it as yours and what
is is of. For example, if I am going to upload a GITS photo, I might
name it as GinnytoSomeoneGITSJan2008.jpg or if
I am uploading a photo of a temari I just finished to the Current
Showcase, it might be GinnyTKingyoTemariJan2008.jpg ....you get
the idea, but you have to give the file a unique name.
- Please DO NOT click the box that says "send announcement to group
about this file" (or words to that effect) - it only clogs up the
archives with non-specific messages and doesn't help anyone. Drop a
note to the list yourself letting us know that you added photos to what
place. This lets everyone be able to follow along and enjoy as well as
comment on them, with the messages making sense. Likewise, please be
sure that if you are posting about photos you include (if need be)
whose photos where.....
If you need help with anything,
please don't hesitate to email me at gttemari@verizon.net
and I am also happy to help you prepare a file for posting, or upload
it for you if you are having difficulties. OK? Thanks for your help and
cooperation!
